Welcome to Episcopal Elections!
Our mission is to bring together in one place the details of bishop search processes and elections from across The Episcopal Church. Article II, Sec. 2 of the Constitution of The Episcopal Church requires "the consent of a majority of the Standing Committees of all the Dioceses, and the consent of a majority of the Bishops of this Church exercising jurisdiction" to the election of a bishop. Furthermore, "if the election shall have taken place within one hundred twenty days before the meeting of General Convention, the consent of the House of Deputies shall be required in place of that of a majority of the Standing Committees."†
Episcopal Elections is intended to be a source of information for members of Standing Committees, bishops with jurisdiction, members of the House of Deputies, bishop nominees, bishop search committees, and anyone else with an interest in bishop elections.
Credit for much of the content on Episcopal Elections goes to the Search Committees, Profile Committees, Transition Committees, and especially the nominees of the bishop search process.
†The 76th General Convention passed Resolution B029 which amends Article II, Sec.2 of the Constitution to strike the requirement for consent by the House of Deputies for elections occurring within 120 days before the meeting of General Convention. As a constitutional amendment, this resolution requires a second reading at the 77th General Convention in 2012 and, if passed, would likely take effect on January 1, 2013.
